Last week marked the end of the first (and very possibly last) season of the HBO comedy Eastbound and Down created by star Danny McBride (Pineapple Express, Foot Fist Way) and director Jody Hill (Foot Fist Way, and the upcoming Seth Rogen comedy, Observe and Report).
The show tells the story of Kenny Powers, a washed up major league pitcher who is forced to go back to his old town and live with his brother’s family and teach gym because of his diminished skills and outrageous personality. On the baseball front, it’s a show that doesn’t really know much about the game, and its better for it because it doesn’t try to be smart in that aspect. Eastbound focuses on the ridiculous behavior of the protagonist and his interactions with his family, his coworkers, and his ex-girlfriend who he is still in love with.
What makes this show fantastic is how smart it displays dumb people. The characters are honest portrayals, if only a little exaggerated. Kenny Powers can in one sentence say something utterly offensive, slighty heartwarming, and stupidly honest. He is both weirdly charming and completely detestable. He is the essence of the post-modern protagonist. The supporting characters all have their moments of laugh out loud humor that make this show that much better.
On the other side of the camera, Jody Hill, along with director David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express) who is well-known for his independent work in films such as All The Real Girls and George Washington, direct the episodes with a brilliant touch of simplicity and humor.
So I hope you check this show out if you haven’t already. You can find it on OnDemand if you have HBO or find a torrent or stream online somewhere, you won’t regret it.
