What The Oscar Nominations Will Be
So here we are, January 21st, less than 24 hours before nominations are announced at 5:30 AM PST. For me, this is the culmination of about 4 months of following this race and I am in some disbelief that the big races have not really changed much in the last 2-3 months other than films like Revolutionary Road and Australia falling and The Dark Knight solidifying its place in the whole thing.
In the end, my predictions are rather safe. There is no real big shocker, short of my lone director pick.
Anyway, I hope these are close to correct, because I actually think it would be a great race*
*(Unless Frost/Nixon goes away….please?)
Best Picture:
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Dark Knight
Frost/Nixon
Milk
Slumdog Millionaire
I think this is a pretty good grab bag of films that run the gamut of mainstream film, and I hope I’m wrong about Frost/Nixon and Wall-E gets in but my alternative pick would be Doubt.
Best Director:
David Fincher - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Christopher Nolan - The Dark Knight
Gus Van Sant - Milk
Danny Boyle - Slumdog Millionaire
Darren Aronofsky - The Wrestler
I went with Aronofsky because I just don’t think there is that bastion of Frost/Nixon hope that everyone says is there, and I think this is a film that has a large passionate following and it may show up here.
Best Actor:
Brad Pitt - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Mickey Rourke - The Wrestler
Sean Penn - Milk
Frank Langella - Frost/Nixon
Clint Eastwood - Gran Torino
Obviously it comes down to the 4th and 5th slot and I went with the Pitt/Eastwood combo because I don’t think Jenkins has the critical acclaim to overcome Pitt’s star.
Best Actress:
Kate Winslet - Revolutionary Road
Anne Hathaway - Rachel Getting Married
Meryl Streep - Doubt
Angelina Jolie - Changeling
Cate Blanchett - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Like the actors, it comes down to the 4th and 5th slots and I think Jolie’s star + people who really liked Changeling will go here and Blanchett has just gotten so much love recently from the Academy that I’m not gonna bet against her.
Best Supporting Actor:
Heath Ledger - The Dark Knight
Robert Downey Jr. - Tropic Thunder
Josh Brolin - Milk
Dev Patel - Slumdog Millionaire
Phillip Seymour Hoffman - Doubt
This is the safe 5 and I see no need of changing it, though I feel Patel isn’t as safe as some think, let alone a possibility to win.
Best Supportin Actress:
Viola Davis - Doubt
Kate Winslet - The Reader
Penelope Cruz - Vicky Christina Barcelona
Taraji P. Henson - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Marisa Tomei - The Wrestler
Amy Adams could easily take either of Henson/Tomei’s slot but I think the fact that Davis is clearly in will definitely hurt her.
Best Original Screenplay:
Milk
Vicky Christina Barcelona
Rachel Getting Married
In Bruges
Wall-E
My big pick here is In Bruges. I may be clouded by my love for the film, but I think it has some unheralded support and they will try to push it here.
Best Adapted Screenplay:
Doubt
Slumdog Millionaire
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Dark Knight
Frost/Nixon
Safe bets. The Reader could take someone’s place, most likely TDK.
Best Original Song:
The Wrestler - Bruce Springsteen (The Wrestler)
Gran Torino Theme - Jamie Cullum & Clint Eastwood (Gran Torino)
Down To Earth - Peter Gabriel (Wall-E)
Jaiho - A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire)
Once In A Lifetime - Beyonce Knowles (Cadillac Records)
The top 4 are safely in I think and my 5th slot goes to this very underrated song from Cadillac Records over the Miley Cyrus song from Bolt! and sadly over ”Dracula’s Lament”from Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
