MLB Mid Season Update
My predictions for the rest of the 2011 MLB Season:
National League
NL East:
Division Winner: Philadelphia Phillies
Wildcard Winner: Atlanta Braves
Division MVP: Roy Halladay - P - Philadelphia Phillies
This pick would be Jose Reyes, but I highly doubt he will be in the NL East by season’s end. In that case, Halladay is simply the best baseball player in this division; a future first-ballot hall of famer, Halladay seems to somehow just get better with age and his loving the challenge of pitching with probably #2 and #3 pitchers in baseball right now (Lee and Hamels).
NL Central:
Division Winner: Milwaukee Brewers
Division MVP: Prince Fielder - 1B - Milwaukee Brewers
Fielder is entering his walk year, just like Mr. Reyes, and he is hitting like a beast right now and if the Brewers end up adding a bit more offense at the deadline, it will only help to accentuate the best 2-3-4 in baseball in Rickie Weeks, Ryan Braun, and the Prince.
NL West
Division Winner: San Francisco Giants
Division MVP: Matt Kemp - CF - Los Angeles Dodgers
Kemp has been an absolute monster with the bat this year, recovering from a unpredictable 2010 that saw his value crater. His glove is still not what it used to be, and keeps him from beating Reyes for MVP, but that kind of bat from CF only comes around once a decade.
NL Champion: Philadelphia Phillies
That rotation. is. unbeatable. And if somehow they are susceptible, they have Chase Utley on the team who will literally kill a man to win.
NL MVP: Jose Reyes - SS - New York Mets (?)
Reyes is playing absolutely ridiculous right now, on par with what Jose Bautista is doing over in the AL. I’m not sure where Reyes will be shipped to, but the fact that it hasn’t happened yet is because the Mets are playing well right now, but they don’t have a shot in the NL East, so they should accept that realization and trade him now. I’m predicting the Giants make the move to sure up their division. If not them, the Angels, Red Sox, and maybe as a dark horse, the Cardinals, as possible suitors.
NL Cy Young: Roy Halladay - SP - Philadelphia Phillies
See: above.
NL Rookie of the Year: Craig Kimbrel - RP - Atlanta Braves
Personally, I think it should be Danny Espinosa, who has thrilled Nationals fans for what they can expect in a future with Espinosa/Werth/Harper/Zimmerman at the top of their lineup. That said, Kimbrel has some nasty stuff, and when he is on (which can be a problem from time to time) he is truly a “closer”.
American League
AL East:
Division Winner: Boston Red Sox
Wildcard Winner: New York Yankees
Division MVP: Adrian Gonzalez - 1B - Boston Red Sox
By the end of the year, I think A-Gon will be the deserving MVP, especially on a team with much more at risk in the Red Sox, but that is to take nothing away from the scary year Jose Bautista is having. If you have a .470 OBP and a SLG over .600, you are playing out of your mind. The fact that A-Gon will probably surpass that “value” says volumes.
AL Central:
Division Winner: Detroit Tigers
Division MVP: Justin Verlander - SP - Detroit Tigers
Verlander has been breathtaking to watch this season and if I had to pick a pitcher to pitch for my life, Verlander would be my #2 pick behind Doc. When he is on, he is nearly unhittable. He can’t be this good the rest of the year, but in a weak division for talent, Verlander is nonetheless the best.
AL West
Division Winner: Texas Rangers
Division MVP: Jered Weaver - SP - Los Angeles Angels
If the Angels have any chance of catching the Rangers, it will have to be on the back of this young stud. Weaver, who led the league in K’s last year, began the season on a torrid 6-0 start, and though he’s regressed as we’d expect, he has still been one of the most dominant arms in all of the game in 2011.
AL Champion: Boston Red Sox
AL MVP: Adrian Gonzalez - 1B - Boston Red Sox
See: Above.
AL Cy Young: Justin Verlander - SP - Detroit Tigers
See: Above.
AL Rookie of the Year: Michael Pineda - SP - Seattle Mariners
Prince Michael has come on to the scene with his electric fastball and has dominated since day 1. With Felix Hernandez, the Mariners have probably the best 1-2 punch for the next 5 or even more years.
Well there you have it, now what do you think?
