2009: Film

For me, 2009 was one of the best years in film this decade. Every genre saw one or more 4-star films, such as Paranormal Activity in horror, The Hangover in comedy, or the brilliant documentary The Cove.

The films that just missed the top 10 were Inglorious Basterds, The Messenger, The Hangover, Funny People and Taken.

• 02. Up

Up and District 9 are neck and neck with my #1, and represent the very best 2009 had to offer. Mary & Max is a film that so many more people need to see, its a moving little film. Same can be said for the ignored The Lovely Bones, which was another high mark for Peter Jackson. The rest of the films have been discussed over and over again as Oscar night is upon us. So, for the last time, here is my #1:

(500) Days of Summer

(500) Days is a film that has a touch of everything.

Terrific writing? ✓

Fantastic performances? ✓

Brilliant direction? ✓

Perfect editing? ✓

Excellent drama? ✓

Wonderful comedy? ✓

There is not much more I can say about this film that I haven’t said ad nauseam over the past 9 months. I believe this will be the film that 30 years from now people will look at in the same way that we now look at Annie Hall. An easy comparison? Sure, but a correct one.

Finally, I finished this series lol.
