My Life In Technicolor

2010 Oscar Nomination Preview, Take 2

Nominations will be handed out tomorrow morning in Los Angeles, so I’ll take my final stab at what the predictions will be. Check here tomorrow for the entire official list.

Best Picture:

  1. The Hurt Locker
  2. Avatar
  3. Inglorious Basterds
  4. Up In The Air
  5. Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire
  6. An Education
  7. Up
  8. Inivictus
  9. A Serious Man
  10. District 9

Other possibilities: Star TrekThe Blind Side, The Messenger, Nine, Crazy Heart, (500) Days of Summer

Only Avatar and The Hurt Locker have a shot at winning this thing, and the real drama will come with what combination of movies will make up those last 4 spots. Any of the “Other possibilities” getting in for one reason or another wouldn’t surprise me.

Best Director:

  1. Kathryn Bigelow - The Hurt Locker
  2. James Cameron - Avatar
  3. Quentin Tarantino - Inglorious Basterds
  4. Jason Reitman - Up In The Air
  5. Lee Daniels - Precious

Other possibilities: Clint Eastwood - Invictus, Neil Blomkamp - District 9, Lone Scherfig - An Education

This is Bigelow’s to lose, and seeing anything but this 5 will be a surprise.

More after the jump.

Best Actor:

  1. Jeff Bridges - Crazy Heart
  2. George Clooney - Up In The Air
  3. Colin Firth - A Single Man
  4. Morgan Freeman - Invictus
  5. Jeremy Renner - The Hurt Locker

Other possibilities - Viggo Mortensen - The Road

In a month’s time this became a lock for Bridges. Viggo could usurp Renner or even Freeman.

Best Actress:

  1. Meryl Streep - Julie & Julia
  2. Sandra Bullock - The Blind Side
  3. Carey Mulligan - An Education
  4. Gabourey Sidibe - Precious
  5. Emily Blunt - The Young Victoria

Other possibilities - Helen Mirren - The Last Station, Abbie Cornish - Bright Star, Marion Cotillard - Nine

Weak field here and the last slot is totally open. Also, I don’t think they will actually give an Oscar to The Blind Side.

Best Supporting Actor:

  1. Christoph Waltz - Inglorious Basterds
  2. Woody Harrelson - The Messenger
  3. Stanley Tucci - The Lovely Bones or Julie & Julia
  4. Christopher Plummer - The Last Station
  5. Matt Damon - Invictus

Other possibilities - Anthony Mackie - The Hurt Locker, Alfred Molina, Peter Sarsgaard - An Education, Christian McKay - Me and Orsen Welles, Alec Baldwin - It’s Complicated,

Waltz walks with this, and the last 3 spots could be a combo of those 3 and the other possibilities.

Best Supporting Actress:

  1. Mo’Nique - Precious
  2. Anna Kendrick - Up In The Air
  3. Vera Farmiga - Up In The Air
  4. Julianne Moore - A Single Man
  5. Diane Kruger - Inglorious Basterds

Other possibilities - Samantha Morton - The Messenger, Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench - Nine, Maggie Gyllenhall - Crazy Heart

Mo’Nique wins another boring category. Kruger may be an upset nominee here, but I’m feeling some Basterds love.

Best Original Screenplay:

  1. Inglorious Basterds
  2. The Hurt Locker
  3. Up
  4. A Serious Man
  5. (500) Days of Summer

Other possibilities - Avatar

If the Academy REALLY loves Avatar, they take out A Serious Man or (500) Days of Summer.

Best Adapted Screenplay:

  1. Up In The Air
  2. Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire
  3. District 9
  4. An Education
  5. Fantastic Mr. Fox

Other possibilities - Crazy Heart, Invictus, Julie & Julia

Top 4 are almost certainly in and the 5th slot is completely up for grabs.
