My Life In Technicolor

The 2000s: 2005

2005: Favorite Moments in Film

2005 was a year that was dominated by epic films. From the remakes like King Kong and War of the Worlds to originals like Kingdom of Heaven and of course Revenge of the Sith, we were treated to an unusually high quality of these type of films. Add into that films like Batman Begins, Sin City, and Munich fall into the big action movies, or a film like Brokeback Mountain that is at its heart an epic love story even if it seems to be a small delicate film. Heath Ledger’s performance, coupled with his turn as The Joker, rivals Daniel Day Lewis’ 1-2 punch of Daniel Plainview and Bill the Butcher.

Also, two of the best comedies of the decade we’re released in 2005. The 40 Year Old Virgin brought “Apatow Comedy” to the forefront and shifted the comedy genre to what it is today. The other comedy is my #1 pick for 2005, but here is my top 10 for 05.

  • 10. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
  • 09. King Kong
  • 08. Sin City
  • 07. Munich
  • 06. Kingdom of Heaven (Director’s Cut)
  • 05. Brokeback Mountain
  • 04. Match Point
  • 03. The 40 Year Old Virgin
  • 02. Batman Begins

Wedding Crashers

I just don’t understand someone who doesn’t enjoy themselves watching this film. I’ve literally seen it 40 or so times and it still gets me.

Wilson and Vaughan in Wedding Crashers is the kind of comedy team that comes along once a decade at best. They are so perfect together that you’re angry almost anytime they aren’t on screen together (and how they haven’t made a film together since is unbelievable.) Combine that with a fantastic cast, from the then almost unknown Bradley Cooper to the genius that is Christopher Walken. It also presents 2 great female roles for Rachel McAdams and Isla Fisher that allow to not only be eye candy (cause they are) but also room to show their chops.

Some may see this as sacrilege, but I think our generation will look back at Wedding Crashers the same way our parents look at Animal House (though I think comedy films are very relative to the times, so I may be wrong).

I don’t know really what else to say, and I’m kind of tired so I think I’m just gonna pop in Wedding Crashers and go to sleep happy.
