Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Trust The Phillies Front Office
No one, and I mean no one, was more angry with the Raul Ibanez signing a year ago. I still hold it as being in complete disregard of any kind of statistical analysis, and though we saw 3 months of Ruthian abilities, I think we might not like what we see coming from him. That said, the majority of the moves made sense have been quite good (Save for signing Jamie Moyer for 2 YEARS in what may be the biggest contract made in fan devotion in baseball history.)
As you may have read from your Facebook Live Feed, the Phillies traded for Roy Halladay and traded away Cliff Lee. As you also may have heard, Phillies fans are equal parts joyous and ripping their eyes out. These people are referred to in layman’s terms as idiots.
Flashback to July 27, 2009. If I would have told you that the Phils would be giving up:
- Kyle Drabek
- Michael Taylor
- Jason Knapp
- Travis D’Arnaud
- Carlos Carassco
- Lou Marson
- Jason Donald
And we would be getting:
- Phillipe Aumont
- J.C. Ramirez
- Tyson Gilles
- 2 Months and the Playoffs of Clifford Lee
- 1 year of Roy Halladay, plus exclusive negotiating rights (Which led to a below market 3 yr/$60 million deal)
Would your panties still be dry? I think not.
The 3 Seattle Prospects essentially offset Taylor, Knapp, and Carassco. So if you said Drabek, D’Arnaud, Marson, and Donald for 2 months and playofs of Lee and a year (plus contract extention) of Halladay, then that might be the best deal made this decade.
Sabrmetricians think the Phils got robbed by the Mariners, I disagree completely. If you look at the 4 prospects we gave up for a year and a half of Lee, they are worse than what we are getting back for just a year of Lee. How is that getting robbed? Whats happening there is people completely overvaluing Lee because one think I believe wholeheartedly is that the Market, especially in a small league where every little thought and move is known by everyone, the price that a team gets for a player like this is more likely than not what he is worth.
Casual fans see this as “Why didn’t we just keep Lee and have an unbeatable force?” Well its 3 pronged. First off, team payroll is by far at the largest ever and ownership gave Amaro as large a bag of money as they felt they could here, so Lee’s $10 million is a big load off. Secondly, Lee has made it clear he will not be giving any team a discount (like Halladay did here), thus is worth is tied up solely in this one year of play and the almost certain 2 draft picks. And lastly, the farm (which was rated 4th in the league this year) needed replenishment after the Halladay trade. You have to balance the desire to win now with the dominant team we have now and the need to be able to have a chance to still be dominant in the future. Having Halladay and Utley in 2013 is worthless if you have no one around them.
It sucks we couldn’t have both, but trust me, this was the best possible outcome.
