Review: Zombieland
Horror movies are my least favorite genre. Zombies are almost at the point where they are as annoying as vampires. That being said, Zombieland is much better than I would of expected from this combination.
Now, thankfully Zombieland errs on the side of caution and is much more of an action/comedy than it is a horror film, though it does have a few parts that may make you jump. The film is about 4 people who have survived an outbreak of some form of mad cow disease that has spread across the world (or at least the country, they don’t say).
Jesse Eisenberg plays Columbus (no real names, they are known by their hometowns), a shut in who has survived the plague because of his hermit-like life style. Along the way he meets Tallahasse (Woody Harrelson), and two sisters Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin), and I don’t want to give anything away so I’ll say its an action-adventure so you can imagine.
Eisenberg is basically a nerdier Michael Cera, but his style works in this, unlike the insufferable Adventureland. Stone and Breslin are perfectly adequate in their roles, complimenting Eisenberg and Harrelson. Speaking of Harrelson, it is so great to see a veteran actor having as much fun with a role like Woody did here. He is easily the draw of the film, and really will keep you laughing throughout. There is also a big cameo in the film that I won’t ruin…but it’s good.
Zombieland is a success where many other Zombie movies, whether comedies or horror films, are not. The tone is firmly set and the story is both fun and full of action that will have you glued to the screen. It’s best comparison is obviously Shaun of the Dead. The latter is wittier and on a different level comedically, but ZL’s action is superior so overall its a good comparison. If that sounds appetizing, go for the ride and I promise you should have a good time.
