The Emmys: What Ya Shoulda Done.
Now I know awards and all that are extremely meaningless, and not just in the grand scheme of things kind of way. Nonetheless, I find them fascinating and is usually something that everyone can understand and argue about.
I’m going to pick a few awards I think they particularly missed. Some are totally agreeable, others atrocious.
Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy
Who Won: Kristen Chenoweth - Pushing Daisies
Thankfully they got this one right out of the actress nominated, because Vanessa Williams or Kristen Wiig winning would have been the funniest joke of the night. Chenoweth has a very cute charm to her, but is more than that. She can play drama and comedy with anyone else. I have no problem with her winning.
Who Should of Won: Yvonne Strahovski - Chuck (Not nominated)
Strahovski looks like this. Just add in the fact that she can pull off being the straight (wo)man with the rest of her cast should be enough. But Strahovski, along with star Zachary Levi, provide the depth that set Chuck apart from its rivals.
Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy
Who Won: Jon Cryer - Two and a Half Men
Only if Kevin Dillon won as Drama in Entourage would this be more of a joke. Let me give you three people who are 50-100x funnier than Jon Cryer:
- Jack McBrayer
- Rainn Wilson
- Tracy Morgan
Oh, they were also nominated? Wow.
Who Should of Won: Neil Patrick Harris - How I Met Your Mother
You wanna know who is equally as funny as those 3, but acts just a bit better than them? His name is Neil Patrick Harris and he is so talented the Emmy’s asked him to host the show. Doesn’t win though right? Right? I’m angry, so I’ll just stop here.
Best Actor in a Drama
Who Won: Brian Cranston - Breaking Bad
There is nothing wrong with this pick. He is doing things no one would have thought he could do, say 5 years ago.
Who Should of Won: Hugh Laurie - House
Really any of the other nominees are deserving, especially Cranston, Hamm, and Hall, but for my money, I’ll take Hugh Laurie’s turn as Dr. Gregory House. Laurie continually provides new depths to a character that could have easily fallen into stereotypes years ago. Not to mention how hard it must be to have to walk with a cane, speak in an American accent, while saying a bunch of medical jargon. I would love to see Hugh branch out into movies and see what he can bring to that.
Outstanding Comedy Series
Who Won: 30 Rock
Trust me, naming 30 Rock as best series is not a mistake in any way. This season wasn’t its best, but its worst season is better than almost any other show on television.
Who Should of Won: Chuck (Not Nominated)
Is it better than 30 Rock? Maybe, maybe not. But the fact that its not in the top 5 is pathetic, and the fact that the nomination pool went up to 7 this year makes it worse. But the fact that Entourage and Family Guy did makes me want to shoot myself.
In my opinion, no show had a better season then Chuck. It went from being a good show with some funny supporting actors and interesting basis, but trying to find its voice, to a show that an identity unlike that of any other show. It has drama, it has action, it has comedy; being strong in all of them. Name me another show that does that, and does it well.
