On Sunday, the Phillies and the Mets played maybe not the greatest game of the year, but probably the most ridiculous.
The Phillies put up 6 in the first, the first 3 on a Jayson Werth home run after fouling off 7 balls. Werth was in the 3 spot because Baseball Jesus got the day off, and this would factor into the game in a big way later. The next 3 came after 2 outs, the Phils got 2 men on and Chooch put one in the seats, his first hit against the Mets all season. Then, Oliver Perez was taken out of the game when he got into a 3-0 count with Pedro Martinez.
In the bottom of the inning, Angel Pagan led off with what should have been a double, but turned into a inside-the-park-home run when Raul Ibanez forgot the rules of baseball and played a ball that was stuck in the wall.
The next 7 innings, saw the Phils put on 3 more runs, and the Mets ring their total to 6, and it never felt like this game was in the bag.
Then came the bottom of the 9th. First, Angel Pagan got to third when Howard let a ball through his legs. Then the next hitter reached on a bobble by Eric Bruntlett, playing for Utley, which also let a run score. The next play was a lot like the previous one, though this wasn’t marked an error. Then came probably THE PLAY of the year. Down 2 runs, with 2 men on and no out, Jeff Francoeur lined a screamer right at second base. Unfortunately for the Mets, they put their runners in motion, and seeing this Bruntlett was moving to 2nd base to cover for a steal attempt, and as if it were written the ball found Bruntlett’s glove and just a second later he had the 15th unassisted triple play in the history of the game, and the 2nd one ever to end a game.
Really there wasn’t a moment in this game that felt comfortable, and I can’t think of a more appropriate thing to happen to the Mets after the hell of a season they’ve had. To be honest, I think I’m gonna root for them…after Monday’s game, of course.
