Review: The Hangover
It’s funny, 2 months ago The Hangover wasn’t on my radar, but by a month ago there was no film I wanted to see more. The film, stars a cast of relative semi-knowns, Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and the break out of the film, comedian Zach Galifianakis.
The story is simple; 4 guys go to Vegas for a bachelor party, things get crazy and when they wake up the next morning the groom-to-be is missing and none of them remember anything that happened the night before. The rest of the film is discovering what they did and where their friend is.
I really can say nothing bad about the movie. There is no glaring imperfection and not even a stupid quirk that bugs me like I usually find in any movie. Is it a perfect film? No, but anything it may be missing, it makes up for in laughs.
I couldn’t believe about the movie is that it is written by the same guys who brought us The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and Rebound starring Martin Lawrence. Watching interviews with the cast, it is evident that much of the comedy is improv, and Galifianakis developed almost his entire character.
The cast of Zach, Cooper, and Helms and Justin Bertha (National Treasure) as the groom, have a great chemistry and you buy the camaraderie needed for this kind of story. Cooper plays cocky and asshole very well. Helms can play nerd with his eyes closed, seen every week on The Office, and Bertha palys a great straight man when on screen. Also, Heather Graham still looks great at 39, and I don’t understand why she doesn’t get more stuff.
Then theres Zach Galifianakis. The comedian, who has always been a personal favorite of mine with his stand up and his online comedy (see: Between Two Ferns) is finally given the spotlight and he Barry Bond’s this shit. Every second he is on screen there is something to laugh about, whether it be what he is saying, doing, not doing, dressed like, or even thinking. I would go so far as to say it will be remembered on the same lines as John Belushi in Animal House.
The Hangover is a crazy and actually very smart comedy that I can’t imagine anyone not laughing the whole way through.
