Top 25 Films of the Decade
I’ll finish up the best of 2000s series this next week, but I thought on the last day of the decade I would deliver my list of the 25 best films of the decade. Now, I am a believer that straight comedies (a la The Hangover) need to be compared on a different scale so I decided to give you the top 5 of those of the decade. Of course films like In Bruges and any Pixar film like to screw that...

The 2000s: Television, Part 2
Arrested Development - Righteous Brothers (2005)
In my opinion, there was no show in the Aughts that was on the same stratum as Arrested Development. The brilliance on display can be seen by the casual viewer in the smart writing and top-tier comic acting, but for those who invested in the show were rewarded with skillfully crafted callbacks and references that enriched the experience of...

The 2000s: Television, Part 1
I didn’t include TV in my “Best of” series honestly because it would just take too much time. I thought however, that I would offer up a run down of my favorites of the decade. Now to be fair, I haven’t seen any of The Wire, Six Feet Under, only 1 season of Mad Men, and only the first 2 of Dexter, so their exclusion from this list shouldn’t be seen as a slight (And...

The 2000s: 2006
2006: Film
2006 was a superb year in film that ranged from Alfonso Cuaron’s apocalyptic drama Children of Men to the comedic madness of Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. There may not have been any unforgettable roles like in the years preceding and proceeding it, but may have the highest quality of top films.
On the other hand, it...

The 2000s: 2006
2006: Music
2006 is one of my favorite years in music, sporting some fantastic songs and even better albums. My Chemical Romance, and Brand New released some of the best albums in their genre for the decade (We need a name for this genre because “emo”, “AltRock”, “PopPunk”, etc. don’t really do it justice. I say PAR for Pop Alt Rock). We also saw the full...

The 2000s: 2006
2006: Sports
Unfortunately, I didn’t have a real rooting interest in many of the great sports moments of the decade. Really I can only think of maybe a half dozen of them, however 2006 carried one of them.
I’ve been a USC fan since I started looking at colleges back in 9th grade, and admittedly a resurgent football program drew me in even more as in 2002-2003 season as they emerged...

The 2000s: 2005
2005: Favorite Moments in Film
2005 was a year that was dominated by epic films. From the remakes like King Kong and War of the Worlds to originals like Kingdom of Heaven and of course Revenge of the Sith, we were treated to an unusually high quality of these type of films. Add into that films like Batman Begins, Sin City, and Munich fall into the big action movies, or a film like Brokeback...

The 2000s: 2005
2005: Music
2005 wasn’t the best year in music, but it has its highlights.
Death Cab For Cutie’s Plans delivered on the promise of 2003’s Transatlanticism. Alkaline Trio, Motion City Sountrack, and The Starting Line released records full of some of the best AltRock out there. Coldplay’s X&Y is a flawed record, I think due to its futuristic/electronic tone that...

The 2000s: 2005
2005: Favorite Moment in Sports
Its strange, my favorite moment in Sports came in a game that was essentially meaningless in the outcome of a series and a season, but just the sheer awe that it inspired justifies it.
It was Game 5 in the 2005 NLCS, and the hosting Houston Astros were up 3 games 1 and took a 4-2 lead into the 9th inning.
In comes Bradley Lidge (Unironically he plays a part in...

Best of the 2000s: 2004
2004: Best Moments in Film
At first glance, I felt 2004 was a weaker year than usual in film, however after going a bit deeper I found that the “Oscar” movies was a weak batch of films, but that mainstream movies actually were above the usual quality we see from year to year.
Here are the 910 films that rounded out my top 10:
10. (Tie) The Girl Next Door, Garden State
09. Mean...

Best of the 2000s: 2004
2004: Favorite Moments in Music
2004 is a peculiar year in Music. There were some great songs released, from the rocking “Vindicated” by Dashboard Confessional to the sonic beauty of “Wake Up” by Arcade Fire. However, I did not LOVE one album that came out in 2004. In the spirit of that I thought I’d do a top 20 countdown of my favorite songs of the year.

The 2000s: 2004
Alright, I want to get this done by December 31st so there will be a huge flurry of big posts in the next 10 days and then I’m taking a week or two off. Also, I’m doing it by myself and putting them up all on the same day. I just gotta get it done lol. Anyway, into 2004.
2004: Best Moments in Sports
I am by no means a Red Sox fan. That said, it is undeniable the greatest moment in...

Did SNL Kill Brittany Murphy?
A week ago, Saturday Night Live spoofed Brittany Murphy, basically out of nowhere. Today, she is dead.
Don’t you find it interesting that Saturday Night Live is in the midst of the worst rated season in the shows 35 seasons? I mean these writers are the funniest people in the world, and for some reason they spoofed an actress who hadn’t been the star of a film for 5 years,...

Movie Review Roundup
I didn’t write a review for every 2009 movie I saw, mostly because I didn’t get to them til DVD, so I thought I’d do short reviews and put it in one post. Some of these films I liked, some…well not so much, and one I loved. Theres about 10 more movies Ih have to see in the next 12 days which are, Taken, Coraline, 9, A Serious Man, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Messenger, Nine,...

The 20 Best Episodes of 20 Years of The Best Show...
Yesterday marked the 20th anniversary of the airing of the first episode of The Simpsons. In the 20 years since December 17, 1989, we have been invited into the home of America’s favorite family. In all that time Homer has gone to space and won a grammy, Bart became a national icon and bought a factory, Lisa saved her brother’s soul and fought the 8th amendment, and Marge has become...

My 100 Favorite Songs of the Decade
This is probably the hardest list I’ve ever have to make, and as you know, I love lists lol. There are more repeats of artists than I would like, but I let the ladder strategy do its job and this is what it came up with. There were so many songs that I loved that 100 is about 1/6 of them, but here is my final list.
The Scientist - Coldplay (2002)
Bent - Matt Nathanson (2003)
Stolen...

I Feel Weird
Sorry I’ve been lax on the blogosphere, and I’ll try to do as much as I can in the next week or so, but finals and ridiculous sleeping habits may make that difficult. In a week and a half I’ll be back with a lot more stuff including reviews for a few movies about to hit wide release, some that have just hit DVD, and I’ll be doing some TV stuff along with getting the 2000s...

You gotta bring the ruckus to that ass Larry!
A list of 5 reasons that I hate Owl City.
thisisadan:
5. In every picture of him, it’s very evident that he’s trying to project this “indie aura” about him. I hate artists that I can tell are trying too hard. What’s with the looking down? Are you trying to make it look like you’re pondering something important? You’re not Abe Lincoln, man.
4. “Today I was gazing out a window at the leafy Pennsylvania countryside, pressed against the...
Oscar season is upon us
thisisadan:
As much as I hate it, I cant ever resist being swept up in it. Pixar movies are the closest thing I have to having a “team,” so this is really the “big game.” (or at least that’s what I would say if i was a douchebag, and i still kind of do say it, so there you go).
Anyway, it’s looking more and more like a lot of the “big” contenders (Lovely Bones, Nine, etc) are bottoming out, and...
